Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.

While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
