Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to question certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
